Sleep Deprivation Increases Risk for Diabetes

In a study in the September 2009 issue of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism(JCEM), it is reported that sleep deprivation in the setting of other risk factors may increase the risk of developing diabetes.

Insufficient sleep may lead to insulin resistance and reduced glucose tolerance, two factors that may increase the long-term risk of diabetes. Researchers examined subjects over two controlled 14-day periods of sedentary living with free access to food with either 5.5 or 8.5 hours of sleep. When the amount of sleep was decreased, there were signs suggestive of a risk for developing diabetes.

This study adds to the growing body of evidence suggesting the importance of obtaining sufficient sleep to maintain one's overall health.
